Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the heart of NAMI! Throughout Montgomery County we serve individuals, families and communities with the support of dedicated volunteers. Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us. Below are a sampling of volunteer roles we need assistance with. If you have questions or would like to get involved please reach out to us at 215-361-7784 or result for volunteer

    • Remote Opportunities: Community Volunteers work remotely making positive changes around mental health education and recovery promotion through local, personal initiatives. We like to call these individuals mental health ambassadors because they work to combat the stigma around mental health by starting conversations that educate and show support in their local communities. Community volunteer activities can be done independently and can include:
      • Go Green – green is the color of Mental Health Awareness Month. Wearing green helps show solidarity and offers the opportunity for meaningful conversation. Consider wearing a green ribbon or posting information to social media. There are many creative ways to go green!
      • Educator – Be proactive in talking to family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances about mental health. Use facts to educate and correct misconceptions. Sharing personal experience can also be helpful in giving another perspective.
      • Share your story  Our mission is to improve the lives of people with mental illness and promote mental health recovery. Share your story to inspire, to inform, to educate, to make someone else’s journey better, to help with your own recovery. Whatever the reason, you matter and we want to hear from you!  Contact us today!
      • Advocate for the cause – combine your educator experience with sharing your story and consider advocating on behalf of mental health. Legislative advocacy influences policies and practices throughout the Commonwealth. Your voice and story can make a difference. Learn more here.
      • Do It Yourself – DIY projects can be done on your own time, by individuals and groups.  Projects help NAMI Virginia by allowing funds normally spent on these items to be spent elsewhere while also helping us highlight to Virginians dealing with mental illness that their community cares.
        • Green ribbons – help us raise awareness
        • Handmade thank you cards – helps us say thank you to our many volunteers!
        • Handmade thinking of you cards – help us stay connected to those who rely on us for support!
    • In-person Opportunities:
        • General Volunteer
          • Ongoing: Volunteers assist with projects that occur weekly or monthly for a relatively long period of time. For example, volunteering 2 hours a week for 4 weeks in the office.
          • Episodic: Volunteers assist with projects that are needed less regularly or are periodically in nature for short periods of time.  For example, volunteering every other month to assist with a 3-hour mailing or special event, like our NAMIWalks.
        • NAMI Affiliate Volunteer- Our affiliates organize local support groups, educational courses and presentations. If interested in giving back as a facilitator, presenter or teacher.
